President Donald Trump has ordered an additional 2,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines to travel to Los Angeles, increasing the military presence that local officials and Governor Gavin Newsom do not want and that the police chief said makes it difficult to manage protests peacefully.

The most violent of three days of protests fueled by rage over Trump’s increased enforcement of immigration laws that critics claim are tearing apart migrant families occurred Sunday, when the first 2,000 Guard troops ordered by Trump began to arrive.
